FAQ

How high does a glass railing need to be?

The minimum height of a railing depends on the applicable building regulations and the railing location. In general, the minimum height of a standard railing is 42” and pool fencing requires 48”. In addition to this, stairs require a minimum height of 36”. Always refer to the applicable building regulations for the required measurements.

Are there any regulations surrounding glass railings?

Glass railings must meet certain requirements regarding statics, impact resistance and fall protection.

How thick should the glass in a glass railing be?

The thickness of the glass depends on the size of the glass element, the load and a range of other factors. These include:

  • One-sided or two-sided fixation: If the glass railing is fixed on one side only, this usually requires a greater glass thickness to ensure the required stability. In the case of two-sided fixation, where the glass railing is fixed on both sides, the glass thickness can possibly be reduced.
  • Mounting type: The chosen mounting method can also influence the required glass thickness. When using glass clamps or glass adapters, thinner glass can generally be used than for other mounting methods.

It is important to note that these factors are only some examples, and the exact glass thickness depends on the specific requirements of the project, local building regulations and other relevant factors.

How much does a stainless steel glass railing cost?

The cost of a stainless steel glass railing depends on different factors such as the size, material, design and mounting method. It is recommended to get an individual quotation. Here at Q-railing we offer you an extensive consultation service.

How are glass railings mounted?

Glass railings can be mounted in various ways, such as top-mounted and fascia-mounted base shoes or using glass clamps and glass adapters. Which type of mounting is most suitable for a particular project depends on several factors, such as the load on the railing and the type of floor construction. We at Q-railing offer extensive advice here and help with the selection of the right mounting method.

What type of glass is best for glass railings?

Different types of glass can be used for the glass infill in a glass railing, such as clear glass, frosted glass (satin glass) or colored glass. Which glass is most suitable depends on various factors, such as the function of the railing and the desired look. At Q-railing, we offer a wide range of glass types and are happy to advise on the selection of the right glass panel.

Our glass railings are designed for both indoor and outdoor use.

Glass railings can be used for both indoor and outdoor applications. Glass railings are a great indoor choice for stairs and galleries, while they are used mainly for balconies and terraces in outdoor settings. They provide reliable fall protection while also giving a modern and attractive appearance.

Glass railings for indoor use:

  • Glass stair railings: A staircase with a glass railing looks elegant and modern. A successful combination of shapes, colors and light turns staircases into an eye-catching attraction.
  • Gallery: A gallery with a glass railing offers an open feeling of space and a clear view of the surroundings.

Glass railings for outdoor use:

  • Glass balcony railing: A glass balcony railing creates a feeling of freedom and openness. It offers a great view and simultaneously protects you from dangerous falls.
  • Glass terrace railing: A terrace with a glass railing is a real eye-catcher. It gives your terrace a special touch and lets you enjoy your surroundings.
  • Pool fence: A pool safety barrier provides an extra layer of protection for your children and pets. Depending on your location it can also keep wildlife out of your fenced in pool.

Glass railings can provide a versatile solution for many different situations as well. They are ideal for stairways as they give a modern aesthetic while ensuring safety. A wheelchair walkway with a glass railing not only offers accessibility, but also an attractive design. Furthermore, glass railings can also serve as property enclosures or as a windscreen on balconies by creating a clear barrier. With their transparent appearance, glass railings blend seamlessly into different environments and offer both protection and aesthetic added value.

Designs

We offer a wide range of glass railing designs.

  • All-glass railing: An all-glass railing is not only functional, but also an absolute design highlight. The transparent look creates an incomparable view and the railing blends in perfectly with modern, elegant architecture. The glass panels are mounted in floor profiles.
  • Glass railing with stainless steel posts: A post railing with glass infill is a stable, durable and versatile solution. By combining individual elements from our different series for post railings, numerous individual design options are available here. The stainless steel posts can be supplied in various designs so that they can be optimally adapted to the structural conditions. With these flexible options for components, you can design your railing according to your personal preferences and requirements.
  • Aluminum railings with glass infill: Aluminum railings with glass infill not only offer a cost-efficient and low-maintenance solution, but also enable the prefabrication of entire modules. Due to the prefabrication of the modules the railing can be installed a lot quicker and more efficiently.
  • Juliet balconies: Fall protection at floor-to-ceiling windows is often called a "Juliet balcony". This is attached directly in front or on top of the window instead of a conventional balcony and thus offers safe protection. Glass railings are the ideal solution here, as they are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also extremely robust and durable. The use of high-quality safety glass also ensures maximum safety. The glass railing blends in with the facade and lets plenty of light into the room.

Our different mounting options for stylish glass railings

There are various options to mount a glass railing, with considerations including the customer’s requirements and applicable building regulations. Here are the most common types:

  • Top-mounted base shoes: For top-mounted installation with base shoes, it is important that the base shoe is selected according to the load of the glass railing. Q-railing offers a wide range of base shoes for different applications, from light to extremely high loads, to meet individual needs and requirements. Feel free to contact us to find the ideal system for your project.
  • Fascia mounting: Fitting a base shoe to the side of the building ensures that no extra space is needed on the balcony or terrace. This allows for maximum usable space and extends the living space outdoors.
  • Mounting the glass infills with glass clamps, base clamps and glass adapters: With this method, the glass clamps are used to fix the glass panels to stainless steel posts or a wall, for example. The floor glass clamps, on the other hand, are bolted to the floor and secure the glass panels from below. In addition to glass clamps and base clamps, there are also glass adapters where the clamps are located in the glass panel.

It is important to note that the choice of mounting method will depend on various factors, including the size and thickness of the glass, the load-bearing capacity of the supporting construction, and the local regulations. Here at Q-railing, we can offer you extensive advice when it comes to choosing the right mounting method for your project.

Safety
